Angling Camp in India

A few years ago River Ramganga was a very popular spot for the Golden Mahaseer angling. However, over the years poaching, habitat loss and lack of conservation efforts drastically reduced the Mahaseer numbers. However, for the past 3 years, a conservation effort on a 3 km stretch of River Ramganga, by our dedicated team, has seen a healthy increase in the population of the Golden Mahaseer again.

Today, this conservation effort involves regular monitoring of all poaching activities, daily feeding of the Mahaseer, stringent patrolling of the 3 km stretch of river and an active involvement of the locals in the conservation effort. To promote angling once again on the river, a fishing camp, right by the riverside has been developed. The camp is an ideal location for angling enthusiasts. The camp is located on a patch of land right on the edge of the river, in a remote and secluded area around the periphery of Corbett National Park and Kalagarh National Park. The access to the camp is restricted. One reaches the camp either by a small trek of about 40 minutes or a river crossing by foot. This camp is maintained and looked after by the local villagers. The camp is protected by high natural fences and is patrolled regularly (for security cover) by local guards.

The camp is located right in the heart of Tiger territory. This camp provides excellent angling options of Mahaseer, Goonch and Indian Trout. The camp is also able to provide excellent camping facilities, state of the art angling gear, expert guides to provide information about the habitat and guide you to identified beats. A handful of discreet anglers who have visited the camp have rated the spot as one of the best beats for the Golden Mahaseer. This location also finds a mention in Jim Corbett's travel tales who himself was an avid angler. In his own words, Jim COrbett describes the Golden Mahaseer as the "fish of my dreams". The camp is surrounded by mountains which are also home to a wide variety of wildlife like otters, Goral (Goat-Antelope), Langur, Barking deer, Cheetal (Spotted deer), Redstart, Palash Fish Eagle, Hornbills, Shreiks, Leopards and the King of the Indian Jungle- Bengal Tiger. The area around the camp is a frequent visiting ground for leopards and Tigers.

FACILITIES AVAILABLE AT THE CAMP:

• Running water (Hot water available on request)
• Toilet facilities
• Tented accomodation (single & Double Occupancy)
• Indian & Continental Meals

ACTIVITIES AT THE CAMP:

• Angling
• Jungle Treks
• Bird watching
• Participation in daily patrols of the beats
• Swimming in River
• River crossings
• Relaxing by Riverside

The significant part of the revenue earned through this conservation effort is channeled back to the local villagers, who have been contributing greatly for the same. The effort is an ongoing activity to ensure that more and more stretches of river are brought under the conservation effort. The idea is to have a sustained long term activity rather than a short term success.
