National Parks in India» Kanha Tiger Reserve
Situated 160 kms. southeast of Jabalpur. lies the India's largest National Park. "Kanha" is 945 sq. kms. in area. The valley of Kanha is consequence of ancient volcanic activity.
The Park is very dense and its raw beauty and wilderness is well preserved. It is known as the best place in the world for tiger sighting. Kanha National park had 43 tigers in 1972 which has increased to 114 in 1997. Kanha provides unvailed opportunity to photograph Indian wild life. The National Park has maintained its wilderness and unspoiled jungles, which was one of the reasons why it was the sight for Kipling's Jungle book. The hottest months in Kanha are May and June, when temperature rises upto 42 degree Celsius during afternoon time, whereas December and January are coldest during which temperature drops upto 2 degree Celsius in night times. Kanha is also home to Gaur (the largest cattle in the world), Chousingha (the only four horned Antelope in the world), Nilgai, Sambar (India's largest Deer), Sloth Beer. Moreover, Kanha is home to one of the last surviving sub species of Barasinga.
The other species of animal found in Kanha are Red Jungle Fowl, Painted Spurfowl, Jackals, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Chital, Wild Dogs, Black Bucks, Langurs, Wild Boar and some rare sightings includes Monitor Lizard, Porcupine, Python and Leopard whose population increased from 43 to over 100 from year 1973 to 1988. Kanha has rich bird life. There are around 300 species of birds found here. The most common birds are Peafowl, Wood Pecker, Indian Roller, five different species of Doves, Racket Tailed Drongo, Green Bee Eater, Red and Yelow Wattled Lapwing, Grey Hornbill, Munia Myna, Tree Pie, Babbler, Bushchat, Flycatchers, Warbler, Green Pigeon, Malabar Hornbill, Black Headed and Golden Oriole, Indian Pitta, Paradise Fly Catcher, Indian Stone Curlew, Common Grey and Painted Partridge. Other birds are Horn Owl, Brown Fish Owl, Scavenger Vultures, Crested Serpent Eagle, Shaheen Falcon, Keshel, Nightjar, Black and Long Billed Vultures, Crested Honey Buzzard, White Eyed Buzzard and many more species.
