National Parks in India

Among the Cardmom Hill region of Western Ghats lies one of the largest and most popular wild life sanctuaries of India. Periyar is situated close to the border of Kerela and Tamil Nadu. It is one of the most picturesque wildlife sanctuaries in the world. Sanctuary is a typical habitat of steep hills covered with tropical evergreen forest. Every place in Periyar from grass lands to hill tops to valleys is covered with semi - evergreen and deciduous woodland forests.

Although Periyar is a Tiger Reserve, but Tiger sighting is almost uncertain as there are no roads in periyar and boat travelling is only means of transport.

There are approximately 40 tigers in periyar which were 34 in the year 1979. Periyar lies at the altitude 750-1500 mts. It has wide variety of wild life. Gaur, Wild Pig, Leopards, Sambars, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Malabar Flying Squirrel, Stripe - necked Mongoose, Otter, Nilgiri, Tahr ( Periyar is one of the last habitat for them), Flying Snake, Flying Lizards, King Cobra, Wild Dog (very common), Porcupines, Nilgai, Langur, Lion Tailed Macaque, Common Langur, Bonnet Macaque, Sloth Bear. Periyar is also home to 260 species of birds which include Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, Blue - Winged Parakeet, Ospreys Kites, White Bellied Tree Pie, Laughing Thrushed, Fly Catchers, King Fishers, Great Horn Bill, Grey Hornbill, Bill Mynas, Orioles, Racket - Tailed Drongos and many.
